Contraindications and Safety Considerations for Transpersonal Breathwork
Contraindications & Important Considerations for Breathwork Experiences
Breathwork can be a powerful and transformative practice. However, it is not appropriate for everyone and may not be safe under certain physical or psychological conditions.
Deep, fast, circular breathing for a prolonged time can create changes in blood chemistry, which can result in:
Physical sensations such as tingling, dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle tension, or fatigue
Emotional release or psychological experiences, including the surfacing of memories, emotions, or altered states of consciousness
Physical release, such as crying, shaking, trembling, and other movements, laughing, and vocalization.
You should not participate in this breathwork experience if you currently have, or have a history of, any of the following conditions unless you have explicit approval from a qualified medical or mental health professional:
Physical Health Contraindications
Cardiovascular conditions, including heart disease, history of heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
Epilepsy, seizures, or a history of seizure disorders
Glaucoma, retinal detachment, or recent eye surgery
Severe asthma or chronic respiratory conditions that are not well-managed
Pregnancy (especially beyond the first trimester)
Recent major surgery, injury, or hospitalization
Any medical condition where intense breathing, changes in blood chemistry, or emotional release could pose a risk
Mental & Emotional Health Contraindications
A history of psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, or other conditions involving loss of reality testing
Current severe dissociation, depersonalization, or derealization
Active suicidal ideation or self-harm behaviors
Recent psychiatric hospitalization or destabilization
Experiences of spiritual emergency or psychological crisis that are currently unresolved
Important Notes
Breathwork is not therapy, medical treatment, or a substitute for mental health care.
Breathwork can surface intense physical sensations, emotions, memories, or altered states of consciousness.
If you do feel overwhelmed at any point, you are always encouraged to slow down, modify the practice, or stop entirely if needed.
You are responsible for listening to your body and caring for your own well-being during the session.
If you are unsure whether breathwork is appropriate for you at this time, err on the side of caution and consult with a qualified healthcare professional before participating.
